Words: Gentleman's Journal
A groundbreaking historical film is set to hit theatres in March… ‘Emperor’… At the end of WWII General Bonner Fellers is tasked with deciding if Japanese Emperor ‘Hirohito’ will be hanged as a war criminal. A cinematic experience you’ll never forget combining large action sequences, with emotion and human interest set against the backdrop of the tensions and uncertainties of the days immediately following the Japanese surrender at the end of World War II. The film’s main historical story line is intertwined with the subplot depicting an emotive love story in and amongst the mess of post war Japan, a soldier searching for an exchange student he met and fell in love with years before in the US.
However how much of this film, billed as ‘inspired by a true story’ is actually based on facts and reality; and how much creative licence are Hollywood using in order to get ‘bums on seats’… we saw ‘Argo’ take the Golden Globe for best picture earlier this month, a great example of how filmmakers elaborate and embellish a historical storyline for the big screen in order to see maximum financial return… but is that necessarily a bad thing? A few exaggerated narrative elements in return for hundreds of thousand of people willingly becoming aware of important moments of our history that otherwise they wouldn’t even know about.
We haven’t seen a war film based in Japan to be produced in a very long time… and with an inspirational cast attached it will be an interesting break from recent formulaic combat films, with lots of explosions, fighting and modern warfare… this looks to go much deeper and back to the roots, telling a story well worthy of being told… the decision that changed the course of history and the future of two nations.
