Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s only gone and written and directed a film. He stars as Don Jon (yes, yes, well done to everyone who got the ‘Don Juan’ reference), a porn-addicted New Jersey guy who objectifies everything in his life – especially, predictably, women. His mates are amazed by his ability to pull ’10’s every weekend without fail. The other things he cares about are equally shallow – his body, his car, his flat. He sets out on a quest to find meaning and fulfilment, and, lucky him, the first person he meets on this quest is the buxom, stunning Barbara Sugarman (Scarlett Johansson).
Don Jon establishes Gordon-Levitt as a director to be reckoned with. Assured, smart, funny and touching, this film ticks all the blockbuster boxes. It also deals with an important issue – namely, whether watching porn gives men unrealistic expectations of sex and relationships, and how this can be monitored. Is that Oscar bells we hear in the background?
Don Jon isn’t out until November, but this trailer sets the scene perfectly. Expect to be impressed – not only by the skill of the directing, but by wonderful performances from all three leads (Julianne Moore also stars). Expect to be just a little bit turned on. But most of all, expect to laugh. A lot.
