Ah. A good old-fashioned thriller, starring Tom Hanks. It feels like ages since one of those came out. Captain Phillips is based on the true story of Richard Phillips, the captain of the American container ship MV Maersk Alabama. The ship was just off the coast of Somalia in April 2009 when it was hijacked by Somalian pirates who managed to gain access to the ship and take it over.
Hanks plays Phillips with brilliance, and some are saying that this is his best role in a decade. First on board the ship, and then as a hostage on a lifeboat, Hanks captures the powerful feelings of a man intent on protecting his men while trying to stay alive himself. The true-story aspect to this film will chill to the bone – anyone who remembers reading a newspaper after the event will be well aware of the horrors of the piracy. But a film this is, and there’s plenty of pacy drama and witty plot to keep the action feeling like a top-notch thriller.
