Directed by Woody Allen, with a cast including Cate Blanchett and Alec Baldwin, Blue Jasmine is certainly a comedy-drama worth watching.
Woody Allen has returned once again with this latest film and skilfully manages to exceed all expectations. He has brought the best out of his actors with a heartwarming performance from Cate who continues to draw the audience in, as well as a suave and dapper looking Alec, a role that he performs flawlessly.
The film depicts the story of Jasmine who to the outside eye lived a highly luxurious lifestyle. She was married to a successful businessman, Hal (Alec), had designer clothes and lived in an extravagant apartment that overlooked Park Avenue.
However, all was to change. Fuelled with anger after being told that she was being left for a younger woman and knowing that Hal was deceiving investors, Jasmine decides to report Hal to the FBI. Her life rapidly turns upside down – the U.S. Government seize their possessions, Jasmine moves to San Francisco and moves in with her half-sister, Ginger (played by the talented Sally Hawkins). We see Jasmine become increasingly unstable as she mentally struggles to accept the realisation that she has absolutely nothing left and somehow has to summon the strength to start her life over again.
The audience is taken on an emotional roller-coaster in Blue Jasmine as Allen reveals the truth in stages, by interchanging between Jasmine in her former life and the troubled life she now finds herself in.
