Will Facebook Soon Know all our Faces?

Will Facebook Soon Know all our Faces?

Remember when even tagging photos was an incredible feat? Facebook are continually trying to improve our experience and make it easier for us to use and enjoy their interface, DeepFace is yet another development that seeks to do that.

Obviously when humans identify a face on Facebook it is near perfectly accurate – unless the image is very obscured you know exactly who the photo is showing. Facebook already has some facial recognition but, as I’m sure we have all experienced, it quite often gets it wrong.

Well, with DeepFace, that all might be about to change. The software will map 3D facial features and create a colourless model to focus on key characteristics. According to Facebook’s API Group, the method has a 97.25% accuracy rate, a mere 0.25% behind the accuracy of a human.

DeepFace uses the four phases of recognition: detect, align, represent and classify and used 4.4million tagged faces to help better the system.
