From an early age it instilled in us (well most of us at least), that there are certain rules to eating and restaurant etiquette that one should try and stick to. The more obvious rules would include not playing with your food, throwing it other people, screaming at waiters etc etc. But here a are few more rules that we have had the misfortune to witness in recent months and while some may not seem so outrageous, they are a sure fire way to annoy any waiter or waitress – without fail.
1. CLICKING OR WHISTLING TO GET ATTENTION
2. SPLITTING THE BILL A MILLION DIFFERENT WAYS
3. PLAYING MUSICAL CHAIRS UNTIL YOU FIND YOUR PERFECT SPOT
4. ORDERING SOMETHING ON THE MENU – BUT TOTALLY RECREATING IT
I’ll have the ‘salmon salad’….with no olives, no pine nuts, the dressing on the side, and instead of salmon I’ll have chicken.
5. SHAKING/HOLDING OUT GLASS TO GET A RE-FILL
6. EXPECTING YOUR WAITER TO KNOW EVERYTHING, ABOUT LITERALLY EVERYTHING
Typical questions of serious irritation include: ‘Are the artichokes organic?’, ‘Is the dressing fat-free’, ‘Is the lamb sourced locally?’
7. DEMANDING A REDUCTION AFTER EATING
Ok, so maybe fair enough if you found a hair in your meal just before your last mouthful, but demanding a price cut because something wasn’t cooked the way you like it is something that should be addressed within the first few mouthfuls, not once you’re finished.
8. OUTSTAYING YOUR WELCOME
All the chairs around you have been stacked, the floor is being swept and the music has been turned off, and yet you are still sitting there? Seriously, time to leave Gentlemen.
9. ARRIVING JUST BEFORE CLOSING
So yes, technically you can do this and yes, technically they should still serve you, but really? Couldn’t you just have arrived earlier like everyone else.
10.USING YOUR PHONE WHEN ORDERING
Whether it is texting, calling or Instagram-ing your starter, nothing will annoy restaurant staff more than this. Plus it’s just rude.
