Words: Jonathan Wells
Elon Musk is not a man famed for his restraint. Two years ago, he plunged a hefty sum (swiftly recouped) into thousands of baseball caps in a bid to promote his tunnel construction company.
Last year, he started selling real, genuine flamethrowers to everyday consumers (despite warnings from the Home Office and US politicians). And, recently, he decided to send his personal Tesla Roadster (the fastest production car in the world, no less) on a test drive — into space.
Suffice to say, the billionaire is not known for frugality. Which is why, when he bought a house with his now ex-wife, Talulah Riley, in 2014, he didn’t spare any expense. With unrivalled ocean, city and canyon views, the mid-century house can be found in the LA suburb of Brentwood — and has this week been put up for sale by Musk.
Up for sale for $4.49 million, the 3,000-square-foot property resembles an angular spaceship and was designed in its singular boomerang shape to maximise its footprint on an awkwardly triangular lot.
As such, inside you can find a curved hallway, lined by floor-to-ceiling windows. A roomy state-of-the art cook’s kitchen with Wolf and Sub-Zero appliances opens onto a living area and a rear garden features a saltwater pool and patio areas.
Expect four bathrooms, four bedrooms — with ample closet space including large walk-ins — and a top-of-the-range security system. Unsurprisingly, Musk went all-out in kitting his pad out with the top tech — including smart-tech security and mobile device-controlled curtains, speakers and lighting throughout.
The house can be found in the Los Angeles suburb of Brentwood, nestled in the heart of the Santa Monica Mountains and a sanctuary for its residents. From high-profile actors and models to the latest heirs of affluent families, Brentwood is a stronghold for Los Angeles culture — so it’s no wonder Musk was attracted to the area.
But, now he’s selling up, is this an indicator the man may finally be off to Mars? We wouldn’t bet against him…
