This week, we’re doing things differently. Our wishlists are awash with striking new spins on existing products; twists on traditional designs including Longines’ ‘Reference 3582’, Glenmorangie’s spirited whisky and even the classic coffee machine. Add to that a pizza oven that runs on electricity, and a turntable that spins your records vertically, and you’ve got as game-changing, groundbreaking an Editor’s Picks as we’ve ever assembled…
March in step: Crockett & Jones ‘Cannes’ Loafers
With this week’s frosty flurries, it may seem a little early for the Northampton-based shoemaker to be stepping into summer. And yet, the new ‘Riviera’ collection brings some welcome (if wintry) wishful thinking. The best of this flexibly-welted, unstructured new collection is the ‘Cannes’; cut from a fetching, tan-coloured calf leather.
Fly high: Longines Pilot Majetek
Inspired by a 1935 timepiece, this modern model is 3mm wider than the original — but still a comfortable wear thanks to those curvier lugs. A new gear mechanism ensures water resistance to 100m, and, when it comes to its cushion case, the rotating fluted bezel that tops it controls the placement of a luminescent triangular pip.
True colours: BMW ‘CE 04’ Vagabund Moto Concept
Never has Alpine customising specialist Vagabund Moto looked so summery. In this two-wheeled collaboration with BMW, the brand has whipped up a concept moped — rendered in a jigsaw of slick white, dark green, beige and black colours, boasting a range of 130 km per charge and primed for the warmer days ahead.
Zip it: Brioni Suede Bomber Jacket
A bomber’s the bomb. It’s a do-it-all, dress-up, dress-down classic of the modern man’s wardrobe. So, if you’re yet to zip one into rotation, shoot for the best. From Brioni, this suede option has a more stand-up collar, a regimental stripe motif and (presumably) very deep pockets. If you can afford it, however, it’ll be an investment for life.
In a spin: Miniot BV ‘Black Wheel’ Turntable
Turning the tables on traditional turntables, this radical record player has spun to life in Schagen, a city in the northwestern Netherlands. Turning counter-clockwise, it’s an odd sight to behold even before you factor in its upright position — and conceals every trace of its delicate tech beneath a handsome, hand-built platter.
Mug shot: Bruvi ‘BV-01’ Coffee Brewer
Another game-changing gadget for your home. This futuristic coffee machine is finished with sustainably sourced wood, and uses eco-friendly ‘B-Pods’. Promising no flavour cross-contamination between brews, it can expertly serve up seven different beverages, including matcha lattes, true espressos and Americanos and even cold brew.
Soft touch: Loro Piana ‘Diviera’ Polo Shirt
The perfect all-Italian polo to layer underneath that Brioni bomber above, this supersoft shirt from Loro Piana is woven from luxurious cashmere-silk yarn. With two-button cuffs, a supple spread collar and a two-toned micro jacquard motif, it’s another expensive item — but will once again will last a lifetime.
Out of the blue: Glenmorangie Amontillado Finish Whisky
Boldly bottled and brimming with spicy, nutty notes, this latest expression in the distiller’s ‘Barrel Select Release’ series puts a complex twist on Glenmorangie’s fruity house-style. Four of its dozen years have been spent in Amontillado sherry casks, imbuing the whisky with flavours including carnations, cashews and fragrant candle wax.
Hot stuff: Ooni ‘Volt 12' Electric Pizza Oven
It was always optimistic of Ooni to establish a pizza oven brand in Edinburgh. And, this year, the British weather has finally forced them to retreat inside. This is the ‘Volt 12’, Ooni’s first electric oven — and one ideal for indoor dinner parties. It has a 33 cm cooking surface, built-in timer and can reach 450°C (850°F) in just 20 minutes.
