Gents, Daniel Craig really, really doesn’t want to be James Bond anymore. Really.
First there was “I’d rather break this glass and slash my wrists [than do another Bond film]” comment and the signing on for a 20-episode run for a to-be-launched TV show, Purity, to eat up his time and delay the next film. Then, earlier this week, following a flurry of big money wagers, betting was suspended on Tom Hiddleston inking a license to kill.
Now this morning, “sources” claim Craig has told studio bosses that he is “done” playing 007, via the Mail. Not only that, but he’s turned a £68million offer from MGM to reprise the role. Daniel Craig really doesn’t want to be Bond.
Of course, it’s not surprising that the studio wants to keep him, despite mixed reviews on Spectre. He has played Bond since 2005 and the franchise has banked over £2billion in box office revenue, easing the company’s bankruptcy issues in the process.
One Los Angeles source told the paper:
“Daniel is done – pure and simple – he told top brass at MGM after Spectre. They threw huge amounts of money at him, but it just wasn’t what he wanted… He had told people after shooting that this would be his final outing, but the film company still felt he could come around after Spectre if he was offered a money deal.”
The latest development isn’t a massive surprise, although that is an outrageous sum of money to shake your head at because you’re tired and your knee hurts a bit. It does continue to beg that unrelenting question though, who will pick up the role? MGM can’t afford to let the franchise sit in a dusty corner, but the next actor who has a pleasure of bringing Fleming’s opus to life, has a hell of an act to follow.
