Crockett & Jones drops the shoe of the summer
The Falmouth is an update on the classic boat shoe, and rocks up just in time for summer
Words: Zak Maoui
When summer swings around you, like us, might start to add a few things to your daily life. Lidos are up there for us, as is sickly sweet ice cream. Sun screen (if you aren't an all-year wearer like you should be) is slapped on. You probably also - and should - rethink your wardrobe. Coats are out. Camp collar shirts are in. Out with the boots, and in with more weather appropriate footwear. And for us, that takes the form of boat shoes.
Boat shoes (commonly called deck shoes, although arguably worn more on the street than at seas in 2024) have been going strong since the 1920s. Typically crafted using soft leather like nubuck, boat shoes are renowned for their comfortable fit and flat sole, as well as their unique look.
And boat shoes, while being no new thing, are more popular than ever. It's all part of the preppy revival we've seen taking place across menswear, whereby guys are dressing like they're Ivy League students with tucked in shirts and polite footwear. And boat shoes are getting a slight update for this summer. The Falmouth is Crockett & Jones' interpretation of a traditional lace-up and sits in the brand's new Waterfront Collection, alongside another style, the Bibury. The British brand's take on the shoe, which is made utilising the label's manufacturing expertise, could be described moreover as a hybrid loafer-cum-Derby.
The Falmouth comes off the back of incredible growth in the buy and wear of loafers over the past 20 years, which while no one had predicted, Crockett & Jones want to capitalise on. The Falmouth features Crockett & Jones' new wedge rubber sole, while they have the same comfortable, yet sturdy fit as the brand's most famous loafers, the Boston and Harvard designs. The shoes come in khaki suede with a wedge sole, blue suede, and a tan wax calf version. Pair any of them with slim-fit chinos and a Breton tee, and you're good to go.
