Cocktails – Nick Strangeway and Badger Ales
Words: Violet
Mixology has never looked more masculine. Award-winning, internationally renowned Mixologist, Nick Strangeway, has teamed up with the home-brewed Badger Ales to create a selection of historically inspired, yet contemporary, cocktails.
Using an array of popular spirits such as bourbon, gin, tequila, and even the green fairy – absinth – industry legend Nick Strangeway has yet again managed to cast his magic over the world of mixology by coming up with some truly inspired beer-based cocktails.
Yeah we know, we know – the words ‘beer’ and ‘cocktail’ don’t exactly seem to go hand in hand. It’s usually one or the other is it not? Or, at push, one followed by the other. Well, apparently that’s not entirely true, according to Strangeway, “Since the 16th century there is a long, well-documented history of beer being used as the base in cocktails, documented by some of the most respected authors of their time.”
With names like Hopping Glory Fizz and Disco Badger, you can forget about delicately sipping on fuchsia pink beverages: these are truly manly cocktails. Using the historical recipes as his main influence, Strangeway worked closely with Badger Ales, to create a range of cocktails designed for the modern palate. The result both complements and enhances the flavours found in the ales with fresh ingredients from the British countryside. Our favorite? Ferrets Bells, so called due to the oranges and lemons in the recipe:
25ml Lemon Juice
25ml Orange Juice
20ml Maple Syrup
25ml Bourbon
…All topped up with Badger Ales’ Fursty Ferret and garnished with an orange wedge, this is a wonderfully rich and deliciously full-bodied cocktail.
Badger ales and Strangeway have aimed (and succeeded) to create a renaissance in the beer cocktail that is so much more than just a side note to a beer list. The cocktails have been created to appeal to current beer drinkers as well as introduce beer to people who aren’t already enjoying it. What better way to get the girls onto the beer and the boys onto cocktails – clearly it’s a win-win situation.
