Cocktail of the Week: The White Russian
Give the much-maligned milky cocktail a go...
Words: Jonathan Wells
The White Russian hasn’t had an easy time of it. Considered passé and uncool at various times over the last century, this creamy cocktail seems to enjoy brief revivals when stars are pictured drinking them or they make a pop culture splash.
But we, at Gentleman’s Journal, believe that the White Russian deserves universal and timeless acclaim. So, let’s give this alternative tipple the permanent renaissance it so desperately needs.
Take a rocks glass, and half fill it with ice. Add 5 parts vodka and 2 parts medium-strength coffee liqueur and mix. Next, take 3 parts fresh cream, shake thoroughly and add whilst stirring to blend the cocktail completely.
Bartenders disagree over the correct garnish for a White Russian. Some say go without, others drop a solitary coffee bean on top, and the remainder choose a cherry. We’d say the coffee bean – for a crunch after all that cream. The height of decadence, the White Russian should be in your repertoire. And, if it doesn’t strike your fancy, try it before you judge.
