Cocktail of the Week: The Sagatiba Classic Caipirinha
With all eyes on Brazil this summer, learn how best to use the national spirit cahaça
Words: Jonathan Wells
With all eyes on Brazil this summer, Tuesday’s National Cachaça Day took on a new significance.
The spirit is the South American country’s national drink, and is made from fresh sugar cane juice. Not to be confused with rum – which is made from molasses – cachaça is best known as the main ingredient in the caipirinha, a cocktail made with lime juice and sugar.
And now, riding on the coat-tails of Brazil’s newfound limelight, drinks brand Sagatiba are attempting to turn this spirit into a global phenomenon. And, backed up by 500 years of Brazilian cachaça tradition, their spirit is the perfect base to the perfect caipirinha.
So, to create an authentic taste of Brazil, begin by placing three wedges of lime into the bottom of a rocks glass with two teaspoons of sugar. Mash gently with a muddler. Next, add ice up to an inch below the rim and pour in two measures of cachaça.
Stir well, and garnish with a small number of raspberries and a slice of lime on the rim.
