Cocktail of the Week: Hunter’s Tea
Put the kettle on for this orange-spiced, tea-infused brew
Words: Jonathan Wells
There’s nothing more comforting than a cup of tea – except for a cup of tea with a shot or two of something a little stronger in it.
The Hunter’s Tea is a spiced orange cocktail, served in a tea cup, and uses not only real tea as a base but also makes use of Jägermeister, the underused German digestif made using 56 different herbs, roots and spices.
With notes of ginger, star anise, orange peel, cardamom and cinnamon, Jägermeister’s herbal taste blends surprisingly well with tea. So how can you recreate this peculiar cocktail?
Begin by filling a teacup with ice. Then, in a shaker, mix two measures of Jägermeister with one measure of freshly-brewed tea – we suggest something finely fragranced such as Joe’s Tea Co’s ‘The Earl of Grey’.
Next, add half a measure of maple syrup, the juice of half a lemon and one spoonful of good quality shredless marmalade. Now shake.
Decant through a strainer into your teacup and then reach for a sharp knife and an unwaxed orange. Carefully cut a thick zest twist, and use this to garnish your spiced and orange-infused cocktail.
