Cocktail of the Week: The Patrón ‘Long Margarita’
The latest cocktail in an emerging ‘long’ trend, this serve brings bubbles and zest to the classic cocktail…
Words: Jonathan Wells
There’s a relatively short tradition of long cocktails. It’s a recent drinks development; a modern mixology trend — and one established last summer by the thoroughly questionable ‘Long Black Russian’. And yet, despite that shaky start (which topped up the classic cocktail’s vodka and coffee liqueur with cola — shudder), the craze caught on.
By October, we had the ‘Long Martini’ — a vermouth-and-vodka highball brimming with bubbling soda water. January brought the ‘Long Cosmopolitan’ — which upped the quantity of cranberry juice and tossed out the stemware for a tumbler. And then, coinciding with International Margarita Day on 22nd February, came perhaps the best supersized sipper to come from this fad; the Patrón ‘Long Margarita’.
A contemporary take on the original margarita serve, the cocktail was created by the Mexican distillery after its parent company, Bacardi, published the annual Cocktail Trends Report. In the latest Bacardi Global Ambassador Survey, 49% of bartenders expressed their preference for ‘premium minimalism’, a style of mixed drink that does away with long lists of ingredients and overblown garnishes.
Instead, this style lets spirits speak for themselves. And the Patrón Long ‘Margarita’ foregrounds the fruity, crystal clear Patrón Silver. Handcrafted in small batches using the finest ‘Weber Blue’ agave, this triple-distilled spirit has slightly spiced notes of white pepper and nutmeg, tempered with sweet butterscotch and brown sugar. It’s a terrific tequila — and one that Fevertree’s zesty lime soda fizzes through to create a long, refreshing finish.
