The 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO is one of the world’s most sought after classic cars. With its aerodynamic design, distinctive air intakes and additional spoiler formed by the fuel tank cover, the GTO is a true icon – and is set to go down in history not just for its looks, but its worth.
John Collins, who runs Ascot-based Ferrari specialist Talacrest, is selling a bright blue GTO, which raced at Le Mans and Sebring at various times in its 50-year life, for £45 million.
The classic 1962 Ferrari is the first to be openly marketed in the UK in over 20 years. Usually, GTOs are brokered privately, with deals being negotiated amongst the world’s richest car collectors.
The model itself, which was first sold by Luigi Chinetti and his legendary North American Racing Team in 1969 for just over £4,000, is capable of 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, has 300 horsepower and can clock a top speed of 174mph.
John Collins said of the sale: “I’ve been looking for a 250 GTO for a while and the opportunity came up with this one, which is the second GTO built.
“It is a beautiful Ferrari, the Holy Grail of classic cars, and it has a great racing history having finished sixth overall at Le Mans and first in class at Sebring.
“I have already had one offer on the car and know there will be interest. It will get you on the Ferrari 70th anniversary tour next year.
“After the US election, people are going to be looking at investing in assets and this is a lot better than a painting on the wall.”
