Affordable Porsches are fast becoming a thing of the past. Take the 1995 Porsche 911 GT2 that sold at RM Sotheby’s London sale last month, for example. The car – just 21 years old – sold for a staggering £1.84million. But not all is lost if you’re looking for a slice of the action, there are still cars from the Stuttgart-based manufacturer that can be picked up for less than the price of a London apartment – quite a bit less, in fact.

Introducing the Porsche 928; originally intended as the replacement for the legendary 911, the 982 debuted at the 1977 Geneva motor show with the first examples hitting the road as soon as 1978. But things didn’t pan out quite as Porsche had intended. The 911 stayed as sales continued, and so the 928 sat alongside it for those who were looking for a fast, luxury grand tourer.
Originally equipped with a 4.5-litre V8 producing 240bhp, the engine was upped to 4.7-litre producing 295bhp in 1980, which brought about the 982. Sporting aluminum bonnet and doors as well as wraparound plastic body-coloured bumpers – a significant development for the time – the 928 was touted (by Porsche, at least) as an ethical sports car with four seats and a complex engine management system keeping check on the V8’s emissions.

Having been on the block for 10 years, the 928 was treated to an even more powerful engine in the form of the S4. The V8 grew to 5.0-litres, which produced 316bhp and greater low-end torque. With the early 1990s came the final GT and GTS versions which again had a little more power but, more obviously, smoother front and rear bumpers that brought the car’s styling in line with the times.
Guide price: £22,000-£27,000
