Classic Car of the Week: 1972 Citroën SM Maserati

After the success of Citroën’s iconic DS model, which incidentally celebrated its 60th birthday this year, the French automaker was looking to develop of sporty variant of the popular French family runabout. Having purchased Maserati in 1968, it was only a matter of time before Citroën attempted to shoehorn an Italian V6 into one of its models and, with that, the Citroën SM was born.

First shown at the Geneva Motor Show in 1970 as Citroën’s flagship vehicle, the SM went on to compete for sales with other high-end GT cars from Lotus, Jaguar, Alfa Romeo, Aston Martin and even Ferrari. Under the bonnet lies a 2.7-litre Maserati V6 which came under fire from the media at the time for lacking in power but, in true French style, the car was noted for being able to cruise at 120mph in comfort – the hallmark of a true Grand Tourer.

This particular car, finished in Feuille Doree – that’s a lovely 70s shade of ‘champagne’ to you and I – has had extensive mechanical work carried out, in the region of £10,000, to ensure it drives as well as it looks. Offered with French registration and log book, this three-owner car will be offered in the NEC Classic Motor Show Sale by Silverstone Auctions on November 14-15, 2015.

Guide Price: £42,000-£48,000
