In 1904, the Santos watch was created – a beacon of revolutionary design and usage at the open of the 20th century. Over 110 years later, its ideals of determination, freedom and comfort are back.
The new Santos de Cartier watch stays true to this original philosophy by reflecting the innovative, ever-changing spirit of its own age, and its redesign focused on comfort, intelligent proportions and respect for this classic aesthetic.
Let’s talk through it. The traditional square shape stays the same, echoing the refinement and symmetry of Parisian geometry of the early 1900s – as seen, most notably perhaps, in the four-cornered Eiffel Tower. At the time, this was a transgressive shape in wristwatches – giving preference to straight lines over round shapes.
Also unchanged are Cartier’s iconic eight screws on the bezel. This functional hardware is a miniature tribute to the proliferation of mechanical steel structures associated with a golden age of architecture. It was daring at the time to display such a functional element – but it’s a choice that pays off to this day.
"Over 110 years later, its ideals of determination, freedom and comfort are back..."
We can see an update, however, in the design of the bezel. Updated to favour the lines of the case and strap, this sleeker look accentuates the stylistic dynamic of the watch.
And, speaking of the strap, this defining element in the history of the Santos de Cartier has been updated with an innovative strap that caters to the modern lifestyle. Available in a range of materials and colours – from gold to alligator skin – all versions are interchangeable thanks to the Cartier QuickSwitch system hidden under the strap.
That’s not the only new feature included – another cutting edge system is Cartier’s SmartLink self-fitting technology, which adjusts the length of the metal bracelet to the nearest link without the use of a tool.
Inside, you’re looking at the 1847 MC automatic calibre and water resistance of up to 10 bar – apt updates to a watch created to stand the test of time.
