Known for its opulence as much as it is the cars on display, the Goodwood Festival of Speed is a must-attend affair for the discerning automotive enthusiast. Among the many events taking place throughout the weekend is the Cartier Style et Luxe, a concours d’elegance where some of the planet’s most pristine machines are pitted against each other in terms of beauty, condition and all-round perfection. Cartier has been sponsoring this affair seemingly forever now and, taking place on the Sunday, it always attracts the big name stars. This year, the likes of ?Valentino Rossi, Nico Rosberg,? Sir Jackie Stewart, Mr and Mrs Derek Bell, Lord and Lady March, Gordon Murray,? Nick Mason attended, and judges included ?Lord Linley, Sir Jonathan Ive, Geodie Greig, David Gandy, Nick Foulkes, Darcey ?Bussell, Marc Newson, Roger Taylor, Flavio Manzoni and Jodie Kidd.
“Established in 1995, the Cartier Style et Luxe has now become one of the most respected concours d’elegance internationally. What started as an appreciation of pre-1940 coachbuilt cars it is now host to a wonderfully eclectic mix of vehicles, spanning some of the most important moments in automobile history. Even beyond a conventional concours d’elegance, the Cartier Style et Luxe is unique in that it focuses primarily on design excellence rather than on restored condition. It is for this reason that the competition is decided not by expert car judges, but rather by eminent personalities from the creative industries, as their many and varied sympathies focus on such abstract concepts as proportion, texture, shape and detailing”.
