Why we can’t wait for the new season of Narcos
The best show on Netflix is coming back with a vengeance
Words: India Gladstone
“The show is not about Pablo Escobar,” executive producer José Padilha told journalists on last month at the show’s Television Critics Association press day at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California “Pablo Escobar happens to be the man who created a mass business of cocaine trade. For lack of a better word, he’s the founding father of this business. But the show is about cocaine.”
When the critically-acclaimed inaugural season of Narcos was released last year, it looked like Breaking Bad would have a run for its money as the most-watched show of the past 10 years. Supposedly one of the best seasons on TV, the show chronicled more than a decade of Pablo Escobar’s criminal empire and everything that went alongside it. So with power, drugs, money and women already in the mix, what does season 2 look to bring?
The beauty of a Netflix show is that you don’t have to watch one episode a week; all 10 episodes will be streamed at once so the Narcos shaped hole that’s been missing from your life can be filled in one fail swoop.
Season 2 is set to be much more focussed then season 1, and rather than showcasing an entire 10 years in the same number of episodes, this season zeroes in on the final year of Escobar’s dark and twisted reign over the Mexican/Colombian drug scene.
There was a real focus on the epic throughout season 1, but season 2 is set too be much more dramatic; think blood, think sweat, think tears – in every single episode.
Season 1 was all about the power that came with Escobar being the most important drug lord in the world, but season 2 takes us further behind the scenes, in situations we haven’t seen him in yet – we see him crumble, falter and become more emotional than ever before. He’s being chased this time, rather than the one doing the chasing.
Season 2 doesn’t just document the final year of Escobar’s reign, but also of his life. This season focuses on Escobar’s dramatic life on the run, what happens when he reaches his breaking point. Future seasons will be more focussed on the drug lords than came after Escobar, and this season is the last time we’ll see him.
The whole season is very focused on the actual character of Escobar. We’re used to seeing him in a serious position of power, one that is unlikely to be compromised. This season, though, we’ll start to see the fall-out of all of these main characters, and we’ll see how Escobar reacts to losing power, money and his family all at once.
Season 2 of Narcos will premiere on September 2nd on Netflix.
