Canon 550D vs Nikon D3100
Words: Gentleman's Journal
When buying your first professional camera many tend to go for a DSLR or in English, a Digital Single-Lens Reflex Camera. This is mainly because the reflex design system allows an accurate preview of framing close to the moment of exposure and DSLR’S also are generally closer to the traditional film formats due to their larger sensors.
The one question everyone seems to ask is “Canon or Nikon” and the unfortunate thing is there is no right or wrong answer. Two models out there at the moment are the 550D from Canon and the D3100 from Nikon, both great cameras but which one you go for depends on what you, yourself want to use it for.
In terms of build quality, the Canon seems much more robust due to its polycarbonate casing whereas the Nikon feels less rigid and durable. They both offer a comfortable grip, however if you are going to be using the camera one hand then you might find the Nikon easier as it has a handy thumb grip.
In regards to the image quality, as you would expect there really isn’t much in it, however when it comes to the LCD screen at the back, the Canon is a clear winner. The Canon LCD has a much higher resolution, in fact more then 4.5 X higher then the Nikon.
The main difference we believe between these cameras is their filming abilities, although they both have a Full HD 1080p video, the Canon has an external mic jack. If you are not particularly interested in using it for filming this may not be an important factor, however if you want to take your filming skills to the next level then the Canon would be better suited.
Although the Nikon is slightly cheaper, we think as a long-term investment the Canon offers more.
