How you can be as stylish as Gosling in La La Land
There are no two ways about it, Gosling is a style king – especially in this film
Words: India Gladstone
Every January, the media picks one film released early in the year to create an inordinate amount of buzz around. This year, it’s La La Land. The film has already swept up Golden Globes galore, and is set to win almost every Oscar going. And while the film itself is beautiful, bold and heart-warming, Gosling gracing the screen as a failing jazz pianist is one of his most stylish forays on film thus far. So, what style lessons can you learn from the actor – and the film – of the year?
Although the film is set in the present day, Gosling’s wardrobe has takes masses of inspiration from the jazz-playing gentleman of the past. Monochrome shoes, wide-legged trousers, wide-collar shirts and loose fitting jackets are all essentials in Gosling’s wardrobe and the confidence with which he wears them proves just how OK it is to go old-school.
Away from the silver screen, Gosling is partial to a decent accessory or two and Seb, his character in the film, rocks a tie just as well. His wardrobe in the movie nails the fine details; his sunglasses collection, his ties and everything in between add to each and every outfit and are essential components that elevate his style to the next level.
Gosling proves that comfort and style can, if you’re clever, go hand-in-hand. The gentlemen of the 50s and 60s are clear inspirations for Gosling’s outfits, where comfort was easily achieved and sharp lines and tailoring were still in check. High-waisted trousers and baggier shirts and t-shirts still look just as stylish, if worn and paired in the right way.
Gosling is a seasoned red carpet favourite, and in La La Land he only secures his position as one of today’s best-dressed gentlemen – especially when rocking the three-piece. Commonly only reserved for very special occasions, gentlemen of today are steering further and further away from the three-piece, but if there’s one thing to take away from Gosling, it’s that this truly is one of the most stylish and timeless outfits a gentleman can wear.
