Bottoms up! How homebrew beer went luxe
Once the preserve of teenage miscreants and middle-aged neckbeards, home brew has gone high-end
Words: Harry Shukman
Not so long ago, home brewing was the preserve of two demographics, and two demographics only. The first: teenage boys too young to purchase alcohol, but old enough to want it. The second: bearded heavy metal fans on familiar terms with the staff at their local Games Workshop. The end product made by both groups would be nobody else’s idea of a refreshing pint, and the author can speak from unhappy experience. Times change, however, home brewing has now gone luxe: more and more customers are sourcing premium equipment to produce gallons of their own lagers and ales good enough to compete with the real deal.
