Best of the Bonhams Aston Martin Works Sale

There’s a significant proportion of the petrol head community who’d sell all their worldly belongings, and quite possibly their children, in return for a classic Aston Martin. For the serious collector, however, the Bonhams Aston Martin Works sale is the place to buy, sell and look for the perfect classic car investment.

Since 2000, Bonhams auctioneers have sold over £70million worth of Aston metal at the Newport Pagnell sale. This year the auction house is celebrating 60 years of Aston Martin Works with a bumper crop of cars. Here are 7 of the best cars to look out for.

1989 ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE VOLANTE

Estimate: £160,000 – £220,000

Made famous when James Bond drove a jet-powered hardtop version down a ski run in the The Living Daylights, the original V8 Vantage is Aston Martin’s muscle car of the late 1980s.

2010 ASTON MARTIN V8 VANTAGE GT2 COMPETITION COUPÉ

Estimate: £110,000 – £130,000

Next on our list is the ex-Le Mans V8 Vantage GT2 Competition Coupé. With a significant racing pedigree and as one of only three surviving examples, this track-only monster is race ready and intended for use in FIA and ACO races. Amateurs need not apply.

1984 ASTON MARTIN LAGONDA

Estimate: £50,000-£75,000

The Lagonda is very much like big hair; an 80s hangover that most people wouldn’t confess to owning. Now it seems they’re coming back into favour with car collectors, with this particular left-hand drive example hoping to command north of £50,000.

1958 ASTON MARTIN DB MKIII SPORTS SALOON

Estimate: £30,000 – £50,000

Got a bit of spare time on your hands? This slightly rustic example of a DB Mk III Sports Saloon is in need of some TLC after being stored for 35 years. With no reserve and an estimate of between £30,000 and £50,000, this tarnished gem could be a very worthwhile investment with good condition models commanding in the region of £200,000.

1952 ASTON MARTIN DB2 DROPHEAD COUPÉ

Estimate: £250,000 – £300,000

This stunning example of a DB2 Drophead Coupé was delivered to Prince Bertil of Sweden from the Newport Pagnell factory in 1953. Since passing into the hands of a well-known French collector, the car underwent a significant restoration in the 1990s before being sold again to its current vendor.

Estimate £60,000 – £80,000

This stripped back, toned and tweaked racing car started life as a V8 Vantage. Marsh Plant Hire, the company whose name proudly adorns the bodywork, set about modifying and redesigning the car to suit their racing ambitions in 1989. After competing in a number of competitions between 1989 and 2013, the car was taken out of retirement for the 2014 Goodwood Festival of Speed hill-climb, where driver Anthony Reid clipped the infamous flint wall causing significant damage to the car. Now having been painstakingly repaired, this boxy brute could the bargain of the sale.

1964 ASTON MARTIN DB5 SPORTS SALOON

Estimate: £380,000 – £440,000

If the idea of 007 piloting his gunmetal grey DB5 through the Swiss Alps in the 1964 blockbuster Goldfinger appeals to you, then this near identical example may just prove too much to resist. Made in the same year as the James Bond thriller, this stunning DB5 has had its 4.0-litre engine rebuilt by Aston Workshop in County Durham and covered just 6,000 miles in the last 13 years. Hoping to command over £400,000, this DB5 will certainly be one to watch when the sale takes place on Saturday May 9 at Aston Martin’s Newport Pagnell plant.
