5 of the best sandwiches in New York
Words: Gentleman's Journal
New York is a city that demands your energy; there’s so much to do and see it’s imperative to stay well fuelled. When 12pm strikes and your stomach begins to grumble, make sure you listen and grab one of the amazing sandwiches the city has to offer. Whether you want to grab something in your hand as you continue your whirlwind tour of the city, or you want to sit down and get some respite while you sate your appetite, New York has it all.
MURRAY’S
Renowned for its bagels, New York is home to a whole host of shops offering this doughy delicacy. Although many of them claim to serve ‘the best’, Murray’s is so confident that their bagels are of the perfect consistency that they have a ‘no toasting’ rule. The bagels, made by hand-rolling, boiling in a kettle and baking fresh on the day, achieve the ultimate combination of crispy crust and chewy inside. With a whole array of flavours on offer, head down to Sixth Avenue, where they have been established for almost 20 years, and try one for yourself.
BUTTERFLY
If you’re looking for something slightly more gourmet, head down to Butterfly, a charming little restaurant that is part of the Altamarea Group. On their brunch menu, make sure to opt for the Patty Melt. Made up of dry-aged beef, caramelised onions and gruyere, this delicious sandwich is not to be missed.
SNOW DAY FOOD TRUCK
When you’re running round the city, keep an eye out for the Snow Day food truck. Perfect for the times you just need to grab a bite and run, Snow Day offers locally sourced foods, both savoury and sweet, featuring one-of-a-kind New York State Maple Syrup. Run by Drive Change, a non-profit organisation, all sales from the truck recycle back into the organisation. By grabbing a delicious grilled cheese sandwich at Snow Day, you will be providing jobs for youth in the community and supporting local farmers.
MEAT HOOK SANDWICH SHOP
If your hectic morning has left you feeling ravenous, head over to Meat Hook, where your carnivorous cravings will be satisfied. The roast pork sandwich is our star recommendation, made up of a delectable meld of pork, tomato, escarole and spicy raisins, all housed in between some fresh Italian bread. Open from 11am – 4pm daily, make sure you grab lunch there at least once.
THE PIG GUY
Nestled in the heart of Gansevoort Market, the Pig Guy offers some incredible sandwiches. Try the pulled pork served on Texas toast with house made red hook slaw or the mouthwatering chorizo dog. And, once you’ve finished your sandwich, explore the rest of the charming eateries on offer in the covered market, if you can handle pudding after such a meal of excess.
