The Best Ryder Cup Shots in the History of the Competition

As we all recover from the excitement of the Ryder Cup and reflect on one of the best all-round performances by a team in recent memory, Ian Poulter’s fantastic chip stands out as the seminal shot of the contest. This got us thinking about other great Ryder Cup moments from past tournaments – some almost unbelievable shots have been played over the years and here are some of our favourites.

Ryder Cup 2010 – Ian Poulter on the 11th

Back in 2010, Poulter was proved how good his short game could be with a fantastic chip on the 11th hole at Celtic Manor. The ball was travelling so fast it seemed he had maybe made a hash of it but, hit with perfect accuracy, it fizzed into the hole.

Ryder Cup 1985 – Seve Ballesteros on the 10th

Ballesteros played an incredibly risky shot on the 10th hole at The Belfry to reach the green in one. Despite the fact he almost sank his shot in the lake he repeated the trick the next day.

Ryder Cup 2002 – Paul Azinger on the 18th

Azinger’s career had stuttered after a promising start in the 80’s and early 90’s and after fighting cancer, few believed he still had what it took. This miraculous bunker shot was cathartic for Azinger and his fans.

Ryder Cup 2010 – Jeff Overton eagles on the 8th

Jeff Overton made a fantastic eagle back in 2010, which has become more famous due to his passionate celebration. Unfortunately for Overton, his shot could not stop the US from losing the close match 14 1/2 – 13 1/2.

Ryder Cup 1995 – Seve Ballesteros’s short game.

In another close match that Europe won 14 1/2 – 13 1/2, Ballesteros was unplayable and put in one of the greatest short games ever. To pick one shot from all of these would be unfair – they’re all masterstrokes.
