The Best Places to Drink Wine in London
Words: Charlie Thomas
When it comes to drinking in our fair capital, we are unashamedly spoilt for choice. There are an abundance of places to check out and because of the immense variety on offer, it can often be quite overwhelming. Whether you’re after a quick pint after work or a heavy evening on the cocktails, London has it all but ciphering out the very best places to go to can be a difficult task. Wine bars are no different, and as the history of London’s wine culture is so rich there are a number of old-world charms just waiting to be rediscovered. New venues are opening all the time too so to help you out we’ve rounded up all the best places to drink wine in London.
GORDON’S WINE BAR, , Featuring oodles of charm and bags of character, Gordon’s is the oldest wine bar in the capital, having been established in 1890. With its intimate arches, exposed barrels and rustic wood-everything, Gordon’s has been a favourite of discerning wine drinkers seemingly forever, so if you haven’t been its well worth a visit.
AQUA SHARD, , The Shard boasts some of the most amazing views in London and, situated on the 31st level of the Renzo Piano designed building, the Aqua bar and restaurant is as breathtaking as it is lavish. Whilst worth going for the views alone, the bar at Aqua Shard is well stocked with plenty of rare, expensive wines as well as more affordable glasses, so don’t fret.
SAGER AND WILDE, , Although a new kid on the block, having only opened in 2013, Sager and Wilde has quickly established itself as the place to be for those in the know. With over 30 well-chosen wines on offer from regions spanning the globe, this cosy little Hackney venue should be right at the top of your list.
1707 WINE BAR, , Fortnum and Mason is one of London’s most famous department stores, but its 1707 Wine Bar has somehow remained a well-kept secret. Featuring an opulent interior and highly knowledgeable staff, this bar is perfect if you want a vino pit-stop in between a hardcore shopping trip.
WILLY’S WINE BAR, , Willy’s Wine Bar is fairly modest compared to some of the venues on this list, but it still houses some of the most eclectic wines around. Their expansive menu includes bottles from all over the globe and at prices starting as low as £20, you’d be a fool not to come here.
