The best places to celebrate National Burger Day
Words: Vincent Lim
The time has come for the humble burger to take centre stage; its ubiquity is perhaps both a gift and a curse, as the difference between an awful burger and a good one can make or break one’s day. Fear not, as we’re on hand to advise you on where you should go to satisfy your cravings today, and to pay homage to one of the best foods this world has ever seen.
1. Patty and Bun
It’s not just the beautiful Aberdeen Angus patty that makes us love Patty and Bun, nor is it the perfect consistency of their brioche bun; the unique Patty and Bun mayonnaise is superlative in its taste, smokey in a way that effortlessly complements the other components of the burger. You won’t regret it.
We recommend the ‘ARI GOLD’ Cheeseburger, £8.00 from Patty & Bun
2. Shakeshack
It’s no surprise that this delightful burger joint from New York has forced its way across the pond, with Shakeshack now an enviable phenomenon here in London. With a branch right in the centre of Covent Garden, you’d be a fool to miss it; although the queue is often gargantuan, it’s definitely worth the wait. Forgo the fries for another burger, or perhaps even a hotdog if you’re feeling like a maverick. Needless to say, their milkshakes wash their burgers down like the gods’ sweet nectar.
We recommend the Smokeshack™, £7.00 from Shake Shack
3. Burger and Lobster
A surprising entry on this list, as we’d usually go straight for the lobster, which represents possibly the best value for money in town. Their burgers, however, are also top notch, arriving beautifully presented with an unbeatable side salad and plenty of alluringly crispy fries. The patty is excellent, as is the bun, and the bacon strips sit crossed on the meat, as if to tell you that ‘yes, this is what you want.’ It would take a lot for us to deviate from the impeccable lobster, but this burger might just do it.
We recommend the grilled lobster, but today you’ve got to try the burger, £20.00 from Burger & Lobster
4. Honest Burgers
Located in the heart of Brixton Market, this has become somewhat of a holy grail for burger lovers. The Honest, their signature burger, is a beautifully constructed piece of gastronomic artistry with an excellent beefy patty and gorgeous onion relish. For those gentleman with a more acquired palate, the Special comes with lovely bits of bone marrow for an artery-clogging delight. Proud of their British ingredients, this is a behemoth of the London burger scene.
We recommend the Honest, £9.50 from Honest Burgers
5. Chosen Bun
You won’t have to move from your seat if you want a taste of Chosen Bun’s fantastic burgers. Although located in Fulham, the friendly chaps at Chosen Bun will deliver your meal right to your doorstep; they’re perfectly packaged so your food arrives in prime condition and trust us, is it a brilliant burger. The patty is luscious, beautifully contained by the bun, and the toppings are top notch. Their sides are exceptional too, especially their rosemary-salted chips. We love these guys so much, we’ve gone for them today!
We recommend the Shoveman, £9.50 from Chosen Bun
