These are the best last-minute gifts for Mother’s Day
Mother's Day is this Sunday. If you'd forgotten, we've rounded up the very best gifts — to ensure your mother has the day she deserves...
Words: Izzie Price
Mothers. They’re brilliant, aren’t they? Always calm in the face of adversity. Constantly primed with words of reassurance. Unbeaten in the homemade roast potatoes game. But it’s been a hard year for our long-suffering matriarchs — with pixelated catch-ups and self-isolated shielding doubtlessly making the upcoming Mother’s Day seem bittersweet.
Whatever your situation this year, surely we can agree that our mothers need a bit of a boost. And you’re in luck, because Gentleman’s Journal has done all the hard work for you. Below, we’ve rounded up a selection of products that will make your mum’s day this Mothering Sunday. Take your pick, and give her cause to celebrate: she deserves it.
Help her unwind with a glass or two
Pubs, restaurants and bars may all be closed: but just because you can’t take her out, that doesn’t mean you can’t treat your mother to a well-earned drink. In fact, lockdown’s all the more reason: in the absence of eating out, why not have her favourite bottle delivered right to her door?
Louis Roederer is at your beck and call: their Brut Premier NV Champagne is celebration in one fizzing, sparkling glass. If your mother prefers to see in Sunday afternoon with a chilled glass of pink fizz, Champagne Lanson is ready with its Rosé NV. And if you really want to make this a Mother’s Day your mum will never forget, why not go for broke on a bottle of Dom Pérignon’s vintage champagne?

Pair your bottle with a mouth-watering chocolate selection
Champagne is one thing; but champagne and chocolates steps things up to a whole new, thoroughly decadent level. But if you can’t treat your mum on Mother’s Day, when can you? This isn’t a day for holding back, after all: it’s a day for showering your long-suffering mum with all her favourite things, and insisting she indulge until she can indulge no more.
Fortnum & Mason is no stranger to indulgence, and these Rose & Violet Creams are an excellent choice for Mother’s Day, infused as they are with exquisitely subtle flower oils. Rococo’s Chocolate & Truffle Collection certainly looks the celebratory part, offering a treat for the eyes as well as the palette. And, if you want to wrap up decadence itself, Artisan du Chocolat has truly pushed the boat out with this “Long Haul” Voyage de Chocolats. Its six sumptuous layers contain salted caramels, artisan truffles and nutty rochers.

Don’t underestimate the power of perfume
It’s been a long time since any of us have had a reason to wear perfume (or, indeed, a scent of any sort), hasn’t it? After all, Zoom calls can’t tell if we’ve spritzed on our scent of choice. But that’s all the more reason to treat your mother to an indulgent perfume this Mother’s Day. Perfume is no longer a necessity; and that makes it a great gift.
Jo Malone can always be relied upon to deliver the scent-laden goods: and this year is no different, as its London Pomegranate Noir Cologne can attest. Floris posits a fragrance which helpfully starts a sentence with its title – “A Rose For…” – a sentence that we’re all too happy to complete with “…your mother”. And could we list our Mother’s Day perfume recommendations without mentioning Creed? Well, if we wanted to sleep at night, we most certainly couldn’t: their Acqua Fiorentina is everything a mother desires, and then more.
Help your mother feel like a queen
In case we haven’t mentioned it, Mother’s Day is a special day. And by special, we mean special special. We mean a dizzyingly, dazzlingly joyful day that will help your mother forget about everything that’s going on just now, and just exist in an exquisite, blissful bubble. And sometimes, jewellery is all that’s going to cut it.

Flowers are a cliche for a reason
It’s true: you hear “Mother’s Day”, you think “flowers”. But this is no time for a token bedraggled bouquet and a limp card: this is a time for bright colours, pomp and circumstance. Flowers are at the heart of any celebration, and Mother’s Day is no exception to this fragrant, floral rule.
Moyses Stevens has its ducks (or should that be petals?) firmly in a row; this Cherry Temptation so jubilantly adorned that it’s giving us early-onset hayfever. If your mother’s ever wanted to feel like Sophie Loren, The Flower Stand Chelsea’s Lilac Rose Bouquet is the epitome of timeless classicism. And Lucy Vail has truly stolen the show with their Springtime Meadow Bouquet, which brings grace and joy (both, aptly enough, distinctly mother-esque qualities) together into one exquisitely seasonal arrangement.
