The most thoughtful gifts to give this Mother's Day
With Mother's Day fast approaching, we've curated an edit of the best gifts to spoil her with – from fragrance to fashion
Words: Gentleman's Journal
Around the world, there are many ‘Mother’s Days’. In the Middle East, most countries celebrate the day on the Spring equinox, 21 March. In Argentina, it’s the third Sunday in October. Panama plumped for 8 December, North Korea mid-November and Norway for the second Sunday of February.
The majority of countries (a grand 96 of them – US included) laud and lionise their mothers on the second Sunday of May. But us Britons – along with Ireland and Nigeria – ring in the reverence come the fourth Sunday in Lent; Mothering Sunday. This year, that falls on 30th March. So, if you’re struggling to rustle up a suitably celebratory present, we’ve rounded up the most thoughtful gifts to give this Mother’s Day.
Beauty in bloom
Spring is in the air, which means your mother is likely contemplating a seasonal beauty shake-up. So, out with the dark lipsticks and the heavily spiced scents, and in with the lightweight lotions and spring-friendly fragrances.
Dior’s Capture Totale Cream is boosted with the powerful Madagascan plant longoza, which is renowned for its natural anti-ageing properties. On the fragrance front, Jo Malone’s English Pear & Fresia scent recalls orchards bursting with ripe fruits, making it perfect for seeing in the spring. And this fast-absorbing, oil-free, tinted moisturiser from Perricone MD at John Bell & Croyden is a multi-functional skincare hero for every beauty arsenal.
Choice bottles
What better way to praise your mother than raising a glass in her honour? From Louis Roederer, this Brut Rosé is soft, delicate and delightfully easy drinking. And for something worthy of even the most well-stocked drinks trolley, why not gift a bottle of Billecart Salmon Brut Réserve NV, a crisp and citrus-forward Champagne that’s perfect as a Mother’s Day aperitif.
If you’re after something a bit different to impress even the most discerning of drinkers, reach for a bottle of KAY Sake Junmai Daiginjo, a soft and silky sake that offers a nice alternative to the usual bottle of wine.
Wardrobe items she’ll actually reach for
Then comes clothing. Rather than going for a statement frock or pair of shoes, stick to timeless, practical threads that she’ll actually wear. Something like a lightweight yet warm jacket to do battle with British springtime – Purdey’s Estate Coat, crafted from Scottish-woven Shetland wool, is the perfect choice.
You can never go wrong with a classic knit – this super-soft jumper from Sunspel is made from an entirely natural Italian spun mohair and silk yarn, and designed to transcend trends and seasons. For mums on the move, a practical yet stylish pair of trainers will go down a treat. We love this Scandi-inspired style from Russell & Bromley.
Bags for every occasion
A woman’s handbag says a lot about her. Maybe she’s a Mulberry Bayswater lady – timeless, chic and ready for anything. Or perhaps the elegant and refined Fendi First Small is more her – compact yet capable, it can be carried as a clutch or worn either on the shoulder or cross-body. On-the-go entrepreneur types will adore this handcrafted calfskin leather tote from Swaine, which is equal parts practical and elegant, with a sleek look and a dedicated laptop pocket.
Joyful jewels
Jewellery is a classic go-to gift for a reason, but don’t settle for any old thing. We’d suggest a watch for any big money buyers – and few come better or more versatile than this diamond-dotted option from Chopard, on a bracelet built from stainless steel.
There are always earrings, and Van Cleef & Arpels at Hancocks has quite the selection. But our choice? These 18ct white gold and diamond hoops in an undulating wave like shape, with a double row frame of 132 brilliant cut diamonds for subtle sparkle wherever she goes. Or, for something more classic, this tennis bracelet from VRAI is an ultra-elegant take on an iconic design.
Home is where the heart is
When buying for a house-proud mother, you can’t go wrong with elegant interior additions that will really make her space shine. Savoir’s 1000-thread Egyptian Giza Cotton Pillowcases are as luxurious as they come. Super soft with a pearlescent lustre, they’re the stuff of dreams – literally.
A sumptuous blanket is always a good idea. We love this one from Holland & Cooper, which is crafted from 100% wool and finished with hand-stitched edges. Finally, a photo frame (complete with a photo of your choosing) is a great way to fuse style with sentiment. Asprey’s Butterfly Marquetry Wood Frame, part of a collaboration with Brazilian designer Silvia Furmanovich, is consciously made from native sustainable Brazilian wood and decorated with intricate hand cut marquetry.
