The Best Free Books on Kindle
Words: Violet
E-book publishers have recently faced a jot of (justifiable) criticism for their rather exorbitant prices. After all, if an e-book saves the publisher money on ink, paper, design, manufacture and delivery, then the price should be reflected as much – unfortunately this is not always the case. However, there are still hundreds of titles that bookworms can find for free on e-book stores, here are some of the best free books for the Kindle.
COMIC
Three Men in a Boat by Jerome K. Jerome
A wonderfully readable Victorian farce, Three Men in a Boat is a story about three men who decide to boat up the Thames, from Kingston to Oxford, with their hell raiding dog in tow.
The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
Wilde’s comedy of manners was a hit upon release and cemented his status as Britain’s pre-eminent comic writer.
EPIC
Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
Before it became an intolerable musical, Hugo’s Les Misérables was actually known as a pretty decent novel.
Moby Dick by Herman Melville
Perhaps the most famous novel in American literature, Moby Dick is more relatable to contemporary life than many people think.
The Adventure of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain
The classic story of the ‘Deep South’, Twain’s now unfashionable classic presents a sympathetic, nostalgic portrait of 19th century Mississippi.
CRIME AND SUSPENSE
The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle
There have been many guises of Sherlock Holmes; House, Sherlock, Elementary are just the ones currently on TV. But for all the small and big screen adaptations, nothing quite compares with reading the original stories.
The Women in White by Wilkie Collins
Considering Conan Doyle’s success, it would be fair to say that Collins’ detective novels are often cruelly overlooked. The Women in White is considered to be a classic detective novel and one of the earliest of the genre.
SCIENCE FICTION
The War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells
It may seem strange that the Martian’s decide to target the not-so-grandiose towns of Woking and Shepperton in Wells’ classic… But at the same time there is something quite delightful about commuters waiting for the 7:45 train to Paddington being pulverised by laser beams.
The Time Machine by H. G. Wells
Another readable, sci-fi classic by Wells completes the list – a man rides in a time machine to the far future, only to discover that a horde of humanoid troglodytes have decided to become cannibals and are feeding on other slow witted humans.
