The best dressed gentlemen of Royal Ascot and how to take their lead

Royal Ascot is one of the most prestigious events of the racing calendar and should be a fixture in any gentleman’s diary. Surrounded by many of the great and good, who would not want to make the right impression sartorially speaking? So if you are lucky enough to be going to the historic event this year and are struggling with how to really make an impact with your ensemble, below we provide some inspiration with a few gentlemen who have got it right year in, year out.

Longines ambassador Simon Baker is a perfect example of how to dress impeccably for Royal Ascot. The actor made an impression in a classic peak lapel dark morning suit, a sky blue tie with a perfectly executed four in hand knot, dove grey single-breasted waistcoat and a complimentary silk pocket square in a similar tone.

The Duke of Edinburgh

There is a reason why, even at the age of 94, the Duke of Edinburgh is still a mainstay on various best dressed lists. And for good reason, as this example demonstrates. He wears a well fitting dark morning suit with Westminster striped trousers, a double-breasted waistcoat and the otherwise classic outfit really helps his colourful patterned tie to stand out.

Prince Charles

Never one to be outdone, Prince Charles is also a very regularly heralded as one of the countries best dressed men and he proves exactly why with this ensemble. The prince wears a light grey morning suit which contrasts well with his black shoes and accessories. In line with the lighter material of the suit itself, the prince’s tie is of a light lilac with a complimentary boutonnière and pocket square, finishing the outfit with pocket watch showing himself to be ever the debonair gentleman.

Prince Michael of Kent

Prince Michael of Kent is renowned for his exceptionally sharp dress sense and is regularly seen in immaculately tailored suits, Royal Ascot is no exception. Here Prince Michael wears a classic mid-grey morning suit, with a contrast collar shirt and a grey tie done in his signature windsor knot with a small blue diamond pattern running through it.

Prince Harry

It is Prince Harry’s use of colour here that really makes his outfit work, the suit itself is very traditional with the strong shouldered suit coat and grey Westminster stripe trousers but, the variation in blue tones from the royal blue waist coat and sky blue tie, with an exemplary tie dimple might we add, are very pleasing to the eye. He finishes the outfit well with a classic white flower in his left lapel

Similar to Prince Harry’s outfit above, Prince Andrew takes one colour, in this case orange, and uses different tones of it for different elements of his outfit. In this case, his orange tie is married with a gold coloured double-breasted waistcoat, a gold pocket watch cements the sartorial matrimony with aplomb.

Stephen Fry

One of Britain’s most loved comedians, he is often noted for his eccentric sense of style. Here he strikes a nice balance between his innate unorthodoxy and classic Ascot suiting. Combining a dark morning suit with chalk stripe trousers and bright yellow accessories featuring a waistcoat with a fleu de lis design and equally bright pocket square.

Damien Lewis

Aside from the questionable handlebar moustache being sported by Damien Lewis in this picture, which he grew for a role. The rest of his outfit is near faultless, with a mid-grey peak lapel morning suit allowing his brighter patterned tie to draw the eye. Being the true gentleman Lewis is his tie even matches the pattern of his wife’s dress.

David Walliams’ outfit is the epitome of understated elegance. A black tailored suit coat and dark trousers, with a lighter grey waistcoat featuring subtle white piping and a dark grey tie, classic, subtle, yet supremely stylish

The Game of Thrones star shows just how the younger gentleman should dress for Royal Ascot. Keeping the suit itself traditional and dark, he wears a mid-blue double-breasted waistcoat and light blue shirt which contrasts nicely with his darker patterned tie.
