The best breakfast smoothies for men
From bananas and beetroot to spinach and sunflower seeds, these superfood smoothies are man's best friends
Words: Jonathan Wells
With time at a premium every morning, many modern men now drink their breakfasts. The rise of the smoothie has revolutionised the morning commute, and means that rather than sitting at your table, you can now power up for the day on the bus, tube or whilst walking to work.
But store-bought smoothies are packed with additives and lack some of the key minerals and vitamins that men need to consume on a daily basis in order to stay healthy.
So peel your fruit, chop your vegetables and blitz your way to a more nourished and nutritional day.
Grab one orange, half a mango, some chunks of pineapple and a frozen banana and blend them up in your smoothie maker. The mango and oranges are high in Vitamin B9, or folic acid, which has been proved to lower the chances of strokes and heart attacks in men – but only men – by up to 20 per cent. The potassium in the banana serves a similar purpose by regulating the heart and helping maintain normal blood pressure.
More a milkshake given its base of almond milk, take one kiwi, one guava, half a cup of strawberries and two tablespoons of honey to create this Vitamin C filled breakfast. And not only is this smoothie chocked full of the restorative powers of this vitamin, thanks to the almond milk, you will also get your daily shot of zinc – a key mineral in the production of male hormone testosterone.
With two medium bananas, one medium avocado, two tablespoons of peanut butter and half a cup of sunflower seeds inside of you, your body will assimilate two key minerals: magnesium and pantothenic acid. Magnesium is important as it combats the onset of lifestyle diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular illness, and pantothenic acid is a key stress reducer – handy for the morning commute.
Around 20 blueberries, some beetroot and a handful of Brazil nuts is one of the best smoothies for men’s health. Blueberries give you important fibre to keep your digestive system healthy, Brazil nuts are extremely rich in selenium, which promotes the production of sperm and aids its motility, and beetroot contains nitrates that lower the chances of male cancers developing.
Try adding two cups of spinach, one ripe pear and two teaspoons of grated ginger to a base of coconut water for a smoothie rich in zinc – the mineral that promotes the production of testosterone – and manganese, an element found in ginger that keeps your skin looking young and your blood sugar low.
