A gentleman’s guide to autumn knitwear
Words: Charlie Thomas
Whilst many of us may despise the sudden drop in temperature during the final few weeks of summer, it does at least provide us with the opportunity to dabble in one of our favourite sartorial pastimes: knitwear.
Coming in all shapes and sizes, cuts and finishes, knitwear is the sophisticated answer to the cold weather and will, if chosen correctly, make you look like a cultivated, confident and downright dapper individual who knows how to play his cards right. The choice can be overwhelming though, so we’ve broken down the key styles you need to wear this season.
ROLLNECK, , We’ve already discussed how the rollneck jumper is a major trend for AW14. The definition of suave, it works just as well as a standalone piece as it does under a suit – especially when made in a lightweight material. Constructed of a wool, silk and cashmere blend, this opulent Brioni rollneck boasts a lightly tailored fit, which is engineered for ultimate comfort. The ribbed hems and rich, teal colour only make us want it more.

BLAZER CARDIGAN, , This formal take on the cardigan makes for the perfect luxury alternative to the blazer. Featuring slim, notch lapels, a three button closure and patch pockets, this unique piece is made of a soft merino wool, which forms closely to the body, creating an enviable fit that would elevate many a casual look.

FINE CABLE KNIT, , Unless the temperature drops to unusually low levels, autumn is a time for your lightweight knitwear to shine. Perfect for layering, a fine-gauze jumper can insulate a suit without distorting the fit, add colour under a denim jacket or work as a standalone piece for an effortless casual look. When purchasing yours, look for added texture like the cable knitting of this Gieves and Hawkes crew neck.

SHAWL COLLAR CARDIGAN, , For times when there is a bit more of a nip in the air though, a chunky-knit is often the only way to go. Stylish and functional in equal measure, the shawl-collar of this cardigan can be turned up to provide extra warmth against the elements, which will prove handy towards the tail end of the year.

KNITTED POLO , , Fashioned from an extra fine merino wool, this knitted polo shirt is an essential addition to a cultivated, timeless capsule wardrobe. With ribbed hems, high armholes and a trim fit through the body, this John Smedley polo should be at the top of your wish list this autumn.
