The Limited Edition Audi R8 LMX has got a lot going for it. Not only is it the most powerful R8 ever (beating the 542bhp R8 V10 Plus) but it has also pipped BMW to the post when it comes to becoming the first production car with laser headlights. No, Audi have not gone all James Bond on us, but what their new headlights can do is just as impressive if not quite as dramatic.
The use of four high-powered laser diodes mean that each of the R8 LMX’s headlights have twice the range of a full LED headlight at high beam. The result is an extraordinarily bright oval headlight that, quite cleverly, arc away from other cars to avoid impacting their vision. Operating at above 37mph, the headlights will combine with the R8 LMX’s LED high-beam projectors, there in by creating a phosphor-converted white light with a colour temperature of 5500 Kelvin. BMW will be releasing their own laser headlight technology with the i8 hybrid super car, which will be the first series production car with laser lights as the R8 LMX is only limited edition.
But, of course, this car isn’t all about the headlights. The R8 LMX features a version of the Audi’s 5.2-litre V10 petrol engine with 562bhp. Audi states the car has a 0-62mph acceleration in 3.4 seconds with a top speed of 199mph. The car also has revised 19-inch wheels with standard 235/35 R19 tyres up front and 305/30 R19 tyres at the rear.
The Audi R8 LMX will first been seen in the UK at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in June and will be available to order then for £160,025.
