Apple’s secretive ‘Campus 2’ seen from drone, looks like a spaceship

Words: Charlie Gardiner-Hill

Although it’d be hard for Apple to keep its new 2.8 million square foot campus, ‘Cupertino’, a secret, they’ve been pretty cagey about it. After the technology giant erected privacy fences around the site recently, someone had the common sense to fly a drone over it (below the FAA ceiling of 400 feet of course) so we could all get a look at what they’ve been up to. It turns out that they’ve been busy. You can clearly see the main building has started to take shape and that space has been laid out for the 100,000 square foot fitness center and a 120,000 square foot auditorium, as well as more than 4,500 trees. Rumours of underground tunnels, that were sparked by initial photos of the site showing deep trenches, appear to have been substantiated as the trenches have now been covered over, although construction experts say they may have been foundations. The campus, which is due to be completed in 2016, is estimated to be costing over $5 billion and was the brainchild of Apple founder Steve Jobs, who died last year. No doubt they’ll be trying to do justice to his vision.
