A gentleman’s guide to regattas

A gentleman’s guide to regattas

For sailing enthusiasts, a regatta provides a unique opportunity to witness a fleet of exceptional vessels in all their glory, competing side-by-side while an on-board racing crew pushes them to their maximum performance limits.

But even if you’re not a seasoned sailor, the combination of stylish shore-side social events, great atmosphere and some seriously impressive superyachts makes for a fantastic way to spend a few days with friends. This of course is topped off with some spectacular locations, and with many superyachts available for charter during regattas, both for taking part and viewing, they can also create a fun alternative to your usual holiday destinations. Here are just a few of the best from around the globe…

COWES WEEK

An event that has long held a special place in yachtsmen’s hearts, this national treasure is a British icon and a highly anticipated fixture on both the sporting and social calendars. The Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week now attracts around 1,000 competing yachts, which take part in some 40 races over the challenging five-mile course between the Isle of Wight and the south coast of England. This year’s race takes place from August 8-15 – if you’re only going for one night make sure it’s the Friday when the sailing action reaches its peak and the best of the parties kick off.
