9 stylish raincoats to go down a storm in the office
Weather the office dress code with these macs and trench coats
Words: Jonathan Wells
We don’t want to rain on your parade, but that crumpled anorak really isn’t cutting it. Stuffed unceremoniously into your backpack – or, shudder the thought, the bag your ‘mac-in-a-pack’ came in – your workday raincoat has the potential to be so much more.
So crumple it up for good, and turn your eyes to our selection of the best rakish raincoats and must-have macs to weather the spring showers this year.
Go bright or go home
There’s enough dullness and drabness about on rainy days – so don’t be a part of the problem. Bob your way through a sea of grey umbrellas and black macs in one of these eye-catching coats.
From Paul Smith, this striped three colour mac is so bold you’ll want to wear it under blue skies. From the raincoat artisans Mackintosh, this ‘Dunoon’ cotton mac is bottle-green and as waterproof as it is stylish. And Howick, with this vivid ‘Shipton’ raincoat, may threaten to take off your corneas, but they’ll also put a smile on your face.
Come up short
The raincoat is, of course, most effective when it is full length. Any pesky splashes or pavement-puddle drive-bys will be caught if your anorak skirts your ankles. But let’s be honest, that’s not a great look.
Instead, sometimes it pays to come up short. Just take a look at this contrast-trimmed offering from Aspesi, which is built to withstand even the worst downpour. Or Gloverall, with their three-quarter length collared mac. Or even, from the masters of macs, this Burberry ‘Kensington’ trench.
Keep things classic
If in doubt, a belted trench will see you right. In a neutral shade, such as camel or stone, this traditional raincoat look will never get old. And, what’s more, it’ll keep you more protected from the elements than any other design.
So why not dive into Dunhill, and invest in their thoroughbred gabardine trench? Or tie the belt on Salle Privee’s ‘Thom’ poplin coat – a minimalist twist on the classic. Or defer, once again, to the masters at Burberry, for their English-made offering – steeped in history and equipped with a practical storm shield.
