China’s arms export

China is well on its way to becoming one of the world’s largest arms exporters, after a military think tank today suggested that it had doubled its weapons export over the last 5 years. Most of the arms have gone to Asia and Oceania and a further 35% of the total has been sold to Pakistan and Bangladesh.
What Brexit means for the £

David Cameron and Boris Johnson are now no longer in unison with their policies, after it was announced that Johnson was in favour of leaving the EU and Cameron in favour of staying. This morning, the pound fell 1.65% – its biggest drop in over a year – and pushing it 3.9% lower than the dollar.
The Pope and the death penalty
The Pope has called for a worldwide abolition of the death penalty, stating the one of the 10 commandments, “you shall not kill” needs to apply to all of mankind. 37 countries around the world, including India, some parts of China and Singapore, still employ the death sentence.
Apple and the FBI

Tim Cook, CEO of Apple, today sent an email to Apple employees stating that they must remain united against the FBI. Apple have challenged a the federal court order that told the company to bypass iPhone security on the phone belonging to one of the attackers who killed 14 people in California in December. Apple believe that the FBI have all the information that they need on the case, and that unlocking the phone could lead to the leaking of hundreds of thousands of innocent people’s data.
Assange’s arrest warrant
Lawyers for Julian Assange have today asked a Swedish court of law to overturn his arrest warrant (there because of the rape claims made against him). Thomas Olsson, one of Assange’s lawyers, today said: “We consider that there have arisen a number of new circumstances which mean there is reason to review the earlier decision.”
Worawi Makudi’s second ban
FIFA today announced a second ban on Worawi Makudi after he failed to respect an imposition that was put on him over alleged misconduct when his was on the committee in 2010 after the world cup was awarded to Russia.
Hollywood inclusion crisis
A study released today has suggested that Hollywood has an inclusion crisis, and that there is an “epidemic for invisibility” sweeping through the film industry where films have less of a regard for women, ethnic minorities and members of the LGBT community. This comes a few weeks after the Oscars have been called out on failing to nominate any black actors for any award.
Royal staff strike
Members of staff who work for the royal family inside Kensington Palace have warned of a strike over their working hours and their £3,000 pay cut that could come into play once the Living Wage is introduced in London.
