If you are heading to the slopes this season, then don’t be shy to try out the great cousin of conventional piste skiing. Cross country skiing is immensely challenging at the higher levels of the sport, but it doesn’t have to be such an uphill struggle. It is very enjoyable at the beginner and intermediate levels. All resorts will have cross country skiing trails that are easily tackled, and they often provide excellent scenery views as well. Skiing cross country is also a useful way to improve on your piste skiing, as it increases your cardio vascular endurance and strengthens your leg and abdominal muscles. Why not start the new year with a change from the ‘norm’ and find out what all the fuss is about.
1. The most important thing is to use the correct ski height and pole length for your size. To find your ideal ski length, you should multiply your height in inches by 2.6, then add 25 inches. Your poles ideally should be 20 to 40cm less than your ski length. Having these measurements correct will prevent unwanted strain on your legs and arms.
2. Start out on a flat surface that is groomed for cross country skiers. Small hills and downgrades should be avoided at the beginner level because it is considerably harder to master the techniques.
3. Glide your feet one at a time in a forward walking motion. You will be lifting your heels when your foot is in the back and dragging your toe to slide your ski forward. This can be seen in the illustration.
4. In an opposite foot to pole action, dig the poles into the snow and pull your body forward. Release the pole from the snow and reach further ahead to dig and pull again. Then repeat.
5. Once you are able to achieve a consistent flowing motion, the act of cross country skiing gets much easier. Your body begins to flow with a natural rhythm on the snow. Concentrate on maintaining this flow to save energy.
6. If you fall down, try to fall to your side with both feet parallel to each other. When getting up, place both poles on one side of your body and dig them into the snow to prop up your body.
Not only is cross country skiing incredibly fun, but it’s also a fantastic exercise for burning fat. You can’t do much better than cross country skiing if you want to burn off those christmas calories!
