5 of the worst Super Bowl XLIX adverts

5 of the worst Super Bowl XLIX adverts

With 30-second Super Bowl adverts reportedly costing brands up to £3 million, you’d be forgiven for expecting them to be pretty darn good. Usually they are, but this year saw some real shockers. Here are 5 of the worst Super Bowl adverts from 2015…

NISSAN ‘WITH DAD’

At The Gentleman’s Journal we love a great car commercial, however, our reaction to Nissan’s ‘With Dad’ advertisement wasn’t positive. Not only does Nissan focus too heavily on a car crash, it also uses the song ‘Cat’s in the Cradle’ as the soundtrack. Small detail to mention; singer-songwriter Harry Chapin actually died in a car crash in 1981. Better luck next year, Nissan.

VALEANT ‘TOENAIL FUNGUS’

super bowl - TGJ.01

If you’re about to watch this before a meal we should warn you that’s not a good idea. Valeant Pharmaceuticals decided (for what reason, we are unsure) to promote Jublia, a topical solution designed to treat fungal infections. The subject is unappealing and no Valeant, placing a helmet over a toe covered in fungus does not make it better.

COCA COLA ‘BIG GAME’

While the message of this Coca-Cola advert was admirable ,we just can’t ignore the absurdity of the commercial. Will pouring Coca-Cola’s sugary soda all over a motherboard transform the world and eradicate cyber bullying? We wonder how many people will try this at home?

NATIONWIDE ‘MAKE SAFE HAPPEN’

Last time we checked Super Bowl Commercials aimed to entertain, not scare, depress and worry television viewers. Nationwide clearly thought the latter. The company’s public-service program called ‘Make Safe Happen’ aims to provide information to parents on how to help prevent household accidents that put their children in danger. What viewers got on Sunday was an adorable boy listing everything he wouldn’t be able to do because he had drowned in a bathtub. Not only was this utterly grim and confusing, we aren’t quite sure what the overall message was.

FIAT ‘THE FIAT BLUE PILL’

An old man trying to get it on with the help of a magic blue pill? Did Fiat really just use Viagra as the main theme of their Super Bowl ad? We love cars but giving one an erection doesn’t tickle our fancy…
