With January comes reflection – the highs and the lows, the failures and the achievements – so it is with this in mind that we look back the most stylish films of 2014…
1. AMERICAN HUSTLE, , Starting things off, of course American Hustle had to make it onto this list. Extremely funny and and with a glowing all-star cast it’s hard not fall in love all over again with the 70s and the ridiculously brilliant style it brought (dubious hair aside).
2. THE TWO FACES OF JANUARY, , This gripping tale of romance and drama never quite received the recognition we feel it should have, not least because of it’s undoubtable fashion credentials. Set in Greece and Istanbul in the early 60s we see Oscar Isaac’s character give a faultless lesson in off-duty style while Viggo Mortensen does dapper gent with the utmost of ease in pastel linen suits complete with tortoiseshell wayfarers and iconic panama hats.
3. DOM HEMINGWAY, , Not the most obvious of choices, but it’s hard to deny that this darkly humorous crime drama oozes style. Whilst Jude Law’s Dom Hemingway may be the lead, it’s his partner in crime, Richard E. Grant, that really steals the show – especially in yellow tinted glasses and plethora of bold style statements.
4. THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL, , Wes Anderson’s film recounts the adventures of a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel (Gustave H) and his friendship with the lobby boy. In true Anderson form it’s exceptionally stylish from start to finish whilst exploring the often darker emotional ideas. Play close attention to Jude Law’s brief but fashionable appearance in a beautifully belted tweed suit and of course Adrien Brody’s full black ensemble complete with a hand-full of gold rings.
5. ONLY LOVERS LEFT ALIVE, , Forget Twilight, this is the vampire you’ve simply got to see. Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton give effortlessly beautiful performances against the dark background of Detroit. When Hiddleston isn’t lounging around in a velvet dressing gown with guitar in hand, he and Swinton tread the streets looking the perfect underground rocker-lovers that they are.
