5 style tips you can learn from Tom Hardy
Everything we can learn from this great British style icon...
Words: India Gladstone
So much as murmuring the words ‘modern day style icon’ can lead to all kinds of opinions formed and voices heard. Ryan Gosling? David Beckham? Hell, why not chuck a royal in there? The fact is, opinions are opinions but if there’s one man with the power to make men wish they were him and women pray they were with him, it’s Tom Hardy. Powerful, masculine and strong, Hardy wears the clothes and never ever lets the clothes wear him. Here’s what we can learn from this Great British icon.
In our humble opinion, turning up to an important event underdressed is one of the biggest sartorial faux-pas a gentleman can make. All eyes will be on you (but not for the right reasons) so learning how to dress to impress is an essential skill to hone. Once you’ve nailed that, you can start to build on your outfit; accessories are key to making a good impression and there’s nothing like a decent tie, pocket watch or tie clip to set you apart from the crowd.
Some of the biggest style icons in the world have made a name for themselves by becoming synonymous with a particular accessory or piece of clothing. For Hardy, it’s the trusty aviator: a piece that he wears so often, and so well, that it’s become an everyday staple. Make like Hardy and find your accessory be it a watch, a style of shoe or your sunglasses – and own it.
Many gentlemen fear the weekend for one reason and one reason only, and that’s that they’ve been cooped up in an office wearing their staple uniform for the past five days and aren’t exactly sure how to go about wearing anything other than a suit and tie. Hardy, however, appreciates that days off are actually the perfect time to embrace the opportunity to wear something a little bit different and experiment with your style.
Sometimes, the only thing a good outfit needs to make it great is the perfect piece of outerwear. Hardy nails the coat and jacket every single time, no matter what style it is. His go-to is the aviator jacket or the classic leather, but mixing it up is key. Invest in a couple of decent pieces of outerwear and let them do the talking for you.
Whilst Hardy isn’t afraid to wear oversized clothes and be scruffy from time to time, one thing that’s always in check is his grooming routine. Whether it’s his well-groomed beard or his perfectly coiffed hairstyle, he is always put together and well groomed and that, gentlemen, is something we can all learn. So pick up your comb, moisturised that face and apply that beard oil – you can thank us later.
