5 Style Myths That Simply Aren’t True
Words: Holly
Fashion is full of rules, but as all with all those of you with a rebellious disposition will agree, rules were meant to be broken – well, a few of them at least. Here we take a look at 5 sartorial myths that simply are not true…
NEVER WEAR BROWN IN TOWN, , Whilst we here at The Gentleman’s Journal revere many time honoured traditions of sartorial etiquette, the once shocking act of wearing brown shoes with a blue suit in ‘town’ was first started by the sartorial rebel, Edward VIII who shocked the royal household with his outlandish style choices. To this day, we still think that the right kind of brown shoe (ie: well made good quality leather or suede) is perfectly acceptable in town.
RED AND GREEN SHOULD NEVER BE SEEN, , Yes it may rhyme, and yes no doubt there are many a grand father sitting at his desk muttering that ‘back in my day…’ but really these colours can look great together. Avoid looking like a christmas covered idiot however muted or darker tones of the colours.
BLACK AND NAVY SHOULD NEVER BE WORN TOGETHER, , Another old fashioned rule that should probably be broken – within moderation. Black shoes paired with navy socks…not so much, but a navy suit with black accessories is a definite yes. Equally, a navy tuxedo with black lapels is one of the most stylish and understated looks around.
BELTS AND SHOES SHOULD ALWAYS MATCH, , Whilst it can look very dapper when matched, it most certainly is not a necessity. As long as the 2 items are in the same hue you’ll be fine – so a dark brown brogue and a dark grey belt are fine, but a light tan boot and a black belt would best left alone.
A TIE SHOULD TOUCH YOUR BELT BUCKLE, , Not actually true, but a lot of men seem to think it is – if the streets of London are anything to go by that is. Gently grazing the top of your waist line is perfect. Any higher and it’s too short, and anything below your belt is definitely too long.
