5 of the best jobs that don’t require a degree

It was once said that going to university just means that you start life three years behind the next fellow. We can see this point. With tuition fees at an all-time high, perhaps we don’t need any further education. Just imagine: no student debt, no chocolate-teapot humanities degree and so on. Furthermore, believe it or not, there are still jobs out there in which you can earn serious money without ever donning a gown and mortarboard. Here are 5 of the best jobs that don’t require a degree.

AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLER

MSDPUTI EC007

Though there are less than 15,000 ATCs in the whole of the US, the world’s busiest airport, Atlanta, handles over a quarter of a million passengers every day. ATCs are needed to provide a safe, orderly, and expeditious flow of air traffic. In a nutshell, it’s a juggling act of delays versus disaster. Just watch out for mavericks buzzing the tower.

HEAD OF THE BRITISH ARMY

The eponymous Sharpe, who rose from lowly guttersnipe to Lieutenant Colonel, would not have been phased by the many UOTC graduates who now attend Sandhurst. If you prefer the idea of shooting rifles in combat over shooting pool in the SU, then a university education is certainly no prerequisite to gaining promotion to the very, very top.

CITY TRADER

On the trading floor, a degree won’t help you know if a stock is going to go up, down, sideways or in circles. Many traders in the City were former barrow boys or joined the profession straight out of school – a good head for maths and the gift of the gab are often far more important than a BA. However, you will need the FCA and CISI qualifications, and to pass an ethics test – wolves are not allowed.

ARABLE FARMER

If the H.E. Bates novel we’ve read is anything to go by, one could be forgiven for expecting farmers to all be out the back, drinking cider and discussing butter. Perhaps this is just a myth. Today, farming is a thoroughly modern business with great entrepreneurial opportunities. With harvest just around the corner, now is the perfect time to escape to the country.

PROFESSIONAL SPORTSMAN

Brazilian legend Socrates was a qualified doctor with a PHD in Philosophy. Frank ‘The Professor’ Lampard has eleven GCSE’s… but that’s about it when it comes to academia in top-flight football. But who cares about UCAS points when you’re banging them in from forty yards?
