If you think that the men’s fashion collections, which have just wrapped up in Europe with a very dashing Parisian finale, were all about the clothes then think again, gentlemen. Now that we’ve covered all the fashion trends, it’s time to turn our attention northwards and take a look at a few of the hairstyle trends that reared their heads at various runways across Paris, Milan, Florence and London.
1. SLICK BACK, , First up, there’s nothing new here gents, but we’re certainly pleased that this hairstyle won’t be going anywhere as the polished styling works perfectly with a beautifully cut summer suit. Forget the city slicker connotations and wear it like the models at Orlebar Brown (right), leaving your slick back a little loose on top, for effortless summer style without the fuss.
2. BOYISH SIDE SWEEP, , A less formal style than that of this season, instead of an over groomed, over worked side sweep, next summer you should take inspiration from a swishy school-boy style side sweep instead – think carelessly polished. Use conditioner after shampooing to get that glossy sheen seen on the boys at Dunhill and use a thick bristled brush and quick blast with a hair dryer to get your hair back its youthful flop in no time. Alternatively, learn from the hair stylists at Xander Zhou and add some soft bed-head textures. Now all you need is some quick wit, boy-ish charm and understated rebellion.
3. RETRO QUIFF, , A very cool look indeed. The large quiffs that are dominating next season’s runways how no sign of waining, but give it 6 months and you should be exchanging your jagged straight ends for softer curls on top. Think Elvis meets Dylan. For inspiration look to Katie Eary, who sent models down the runway with wonderfully buoyant curls – tie-dye shirts and peace signs optional.
4. LONG & STRAIGHT, , Ok, so we’ll admit it, this one isn’t for the faint hearted, but there’s just something about a mane of flowing locks on a man that some women simply can’t resist – trust us. Perhaps it’s that carefree surfer attitude that comes with overgrown locks? Whatever the reason, multiple designers were in on the act; Ada & Nick had twins with flowing hair stomping down the runway to bellowing drum beats, whilst Julien David and Missoni equally had an abundance of long maned men marching the runways. If this style appeals to you then we suggest you get growing now, so that by next summer you too can stick up to sartorial two fingers to conformity.
5. 40s SLIDE SLICK, , Think George Clooney’s most recent hairstyle come Don Draper’s perfect head of hair. The 40s inspired side parting was everywhere at men’s collections. If you have straight hair already then you’re in luck, as it merely takes a bit of hair wax on just washed hair and a comb through it to achieve this very dapper look. Can be worn with formal suiting, or relaxed separates – just as long as that parting is straight.
