Industrious and ambitious, Yego learned how to throw a javelin by watching videos on Youtube, and was inhibited even more by a groin injury sustained during his warm up. Resilient, Yego carried on regardless, posting his winning throw with his third attempt, eschewing his others after acknowledging the extent of his injury. It was however, enough, as the Kenyan won his nation’s very first Commonwealth non-running gold, displacing Keshorn Walcott, the reigning Olympic champion.

Rosefelo Siosi loses the final but wins the crowd
This Solomon Islands teenager is an example of how determination, regardless of result, is a gentlemanly trait universally respected. The 17-year old trains at a normal altitude, unlike all those Kenyan champions, and does so without any coaches, so it’s no surprise that he was far from the favourite at the beginning of the 5000m final. Siosi finished more than one and a half minutes behind the competitor ahead of him, but it was clear to the crowd that the inspiring young man was doing his very best for himself and his country. Crossing the finish line to a chorus of cheers and roars from the energetic Glaswegian crowd, Rosefelo Siosi is sure to return home a Commonwealth hero.

13 year-old Paralympian becomes the youngest ever Commonwealth medalist
Some people only blossom when they go to university, others when they reach their late twenties and beyond. Erraid Davis, however, became the youngest ever Commonwealth medalist when she won bronze in the 100m breaststroke SB9 final. Erraid, who had extreme difficulty walking at the age of four, suffers from Perthes’ Disease, a rare condition that impedes her hip movement. Now contemplating involvement in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, this is a young woman who’s already made her mark on the world.
