5 compliments women actually want to receive…
From laughing at her jokes to the classic one-liners, we navigate the fickle path of flirtation...
Words: Gentleman's Journal
Let’s get things straight, compliments can be a tricky path. While only the dimmest of daters would think a certain combination of kind words could get them lucky, remembering to tell someone why they are special is both good manners and best practice for the modern gentleman.
We believe it’s high time for ‘out with the old and in with the new’, and are pioneering a fresh way to get your admiration and true feelings out in the open, all whilst staying out of trouble or prison.
You might find the answer simply comes down to paying attention…
"That's a great jumper"
Admittedly this can still be creepy, with the unspoken suggestion that you’re really just envisaging said sweater on your bedroom floor, but it is undoubtedly a better way to go than complimenting a woman on her body.
In fact, a gentleman should really never bring up a woman’s body in polite conversation, unless he’s a) a doctor addressing his medical subject, or b) letting her know that a fast-moving object approaches (i.e. watch out you’re going to hit your head on that vase).
"I love the work you did with that NGO"
Don’t fake anything, because she will see through your feigned interest like freshly cleaned window, but if you genuinely admire her work or passions — tell her.
Shared interests are the bedrock of any successful relationship, and what’s more it shows you’re capable of listening and not just out to talk about yourself (unlike the other 90% of men she’s dated, who didn’t bag a second date).
"Hahahahahahahahaha!"

If you don’t believe us, science says that if the laughter comes easily on a date then it’s likely that there is a genuine romantic spark.
"Where has the time gone?"
A surefire way to know that you might be onto something special, is when you glance at your watch (no phones at the table, thank you), and find that two hours have slipped away in what feels like two minutes. Let her know how quickly the time has flown, and she will see just how much you are enjoying her company.
*Quick tip here: get your lexicon in gear, because glancing at your watch and exclaiming “is that the time” has a rather different connotations.
"Do you work at Starbucks? Because I like you a latte."
Well, it’s worth a go. See also….,
See also…. “Are you a magician? Because whenever I look at you, everyone else disappears”. And, worse still, “There’s only one thing I want to change about you, and that’s your last name.”
So the date went well, but who picks up the bill? We have the answer…
