5 characteristics women look for in a boyfriend

Words: Guy Aubrey Devito

What women want may be one of life’s great mysteries – but what women want from a boyfriend is a quagmire more easily solved. Here are 5 characteristics that women look for in a boyfriend.

CONFIDENCE

TGJ – 54-3b

Confidence is such an important characteristic when it comes to wooing women. Most women, when talking about men they find attractive will cite ‘his confidence’ as the reason they initially found him appealing. Although it’s great to be confident, be sure you don’t make the step into arrogance – something that most women find absolutely abhorrent.

HUMOUR

TGJ – 54-4a

Women like a man who can make them laugh as Woody Allen persistently proves in his films. Making jokes, telling humorous anecdotes and being just a bit silly will instantly endear most women to you. Don’t just rely on just being funny on dates though – you need to show that you’re naturally and effortlessly funny as part of a package.

DRIVE

TGJ – 54-5a

Women often cite drive an ambition as a major turn on – they want a man who has targets and wants to better himself. Men who are a bit vanilla, or are just content to ‘see how it goes’ are not the kind of men who women fantasise about being with. Of course not all men can be preposterously successful, but the ladies want to see you try to be the best man you can be.

EMPATHY

TGJ – 54-6a

One of the great modern misnomers is that women ‘don’t go for nice guys’ – nothing could be further from the truth, they just don’t go for guys who are nice, who don’t have a whole lot else going on. Being able to empathise with the problems of others – and specifically the problems of a love interest is essential to winning a woman’s heart.

CHARM

TGJ – 54-7a

Charm is perhaps something that cannot be taught, a charming man is naturally a charming man and hasn’t attended a seminar or just learnt how to charm. Charm is compliment delivered a certain way, a smile that is both cheeky and loving, an eyebrow elevated by just a few millimetres to make a point. If you’re lucky enough to possess charm you’ll always be able to attract a girlfriend.
